Jules Cheret

Jules Cheret

Jules Cheret was widely known for his "swirling atmosphere of color and light," his dramatic subjects and his brilliant and innovative colors. His works show both an interest in Japanese woodblock prints and in the French art movement called Rococo. The swirling characters and background are reminiscent of the work of Rococo artists such as Francois Boucher and Jean-Honore Fragonard. Cheret was extremely prolific during his lifetime, producing thousands of posters. The influence of the Japanese woodblock prints is evident in his color palettes, and his wide flat areas of color in his works.
